THE MONTE CARLO MURDER.
Paris, September 8. Vere Goold, who was convicted, along with his wife, of having murdered Madame Levin at Monte Carlo, has died at the penal settlement of Cayenne, in French Guiana. [Vere Goold and his wife were both convicted of the murder of Madame Levin, the well-to-do widow of a Swedish engineer. The body was packed in a trunk. The apparent motive was to obtain money for gambling, and the tragedy proved a rather undesirable advertisement for Monte Carlo. Goold, who was an Englishman, was sentenced to hard labour for life, and his wife, as the principal criminal, to death ; but the French Government reprieved Mrs Goold, whose sentence was commuted to penal servitude for life.]
