Paris, September 8. Vere Goold, who was convicted, along with his wife, of having murdered Madame Levin at Monte Carlo, has died at the penal settlement of Cayenne, in French Guiana. [Vere Goold and his wife were both convicted of the murder of Madame Levin, the well-to-do widow of a Swedish engineer. The body was packed in a trunk. The apparent motive was to obtain money for gambling, and the tragedy proved a rather undesirable advertisement for Monte Carlo. Goold, who was an Englishman, was sentenced to hard labour for life, and his wife, as the principal criminal, to death ; but the French Government reprieved Mrs Goold, whose sentence was commuted to penal servitude for life.]
