TWICE CONQUERED POLE.
COMMANDER PEARY SUCCESSFUL.
London, September 7
Reuter’s Agency has received a telegram from Commander Robert Edwin Peary, sent from Indian Harbour, Labrador, North America, stating that he has “ nailed the Stars and Stripes to the North Pole.” The Governor of Newfoundland has received a similar telegram containing Commander Peary’s congratulations on the achievement, because the captain and the crew of , his steamer, the Roosvelt, were Newfoundlanders. New York, September 7. Mr Herbert Bridgman, Secretary of the Peary Arctic Club of America, has received a message in Peary’s code stating that the North Pole was reached, and that the steamer Roosevelt is safe. The New York Times states that Commander Peary telegraphs from Indian Harbour, via Cape Ray:
“Reached the Pole ou April 6, 1909. Expect to arrive at Chateau Bay on September 7. Secure control of wire for toe there, and arrange to expedite transmission of a big story.” Mr Donald M’Millan, the geologist and zoologist of the party, has cabled to the Worcester Academy of Massachusetts, where he is Instructor in Mathematics:
“The top of the* earth reached at last. Greetings to the faculty and the boys.”
MESSAGE TO MRS PEARY.— HER REPEY. Commander Peary telegraphed to his wife from Indian Harbour: “Have made good at last. Have the old Pole. Am well. Love. Will wire again from Chateau.” To this, Mrs Peary telegraphed to her husband the following reply: “All well, Bert. Love. God bless you. Hurry home.” ■UNRESERVEDLY ACCEPTED London, September 7. The newspapers unreservedly accept Commander Peary’s messages. The Times recalls that Peary stated, before he left last year on his present trip: “If I reach the Pole during the coming winter, my friends will hear of my triumph between August 15 and September 15.”
