Floods have devastated the Loemadjaug district, Proboliuggo, in the north of the Dutch island of Java. Five hundred perished. News has been received from Chile that M. Becker, ex-Chau-cellor of the German Legation at Santiago, Chile, has been found guilty of murder, arsou, falsification of accounts, and swindling, and has been sentenced to death. The Pacific Cable Board’s receipts for the year ending March 31 last, amounted to ,£113,093, and the expenditure to ,£96,435. The number of messages dispatched was 243,922. Peking, Sept. 4.
The Russian Minister at Peking has been instructed to urge that Russian capitalists, like those ot the United States, should be admitted to participation in the Han-kau-Szechuan railway loan. France supports Russia in this matter. Madrid, Sept, 3. The Spanish troops under General Aquilera routed the Moors, consisting of four hundred horse and fifteen hundred foot, near El Arba. Heavy loss was inflicted on the Moorish forces, especially on the cavalry, who charged twice under heavy artillery fire. London, September 5. The Westminster Gazette (Liberal) admits that there is a growing assumption that the House of Lords will reject the Budget, but is convinced that the Peers’ action •will be reluctant, as it will arouse forces the precise strength of which cannot at present be ascertained. The Gazette adds :—“ The political temperature is decidedly changeable, but Lord Landsdowue may be trusted to recommend what is the least perilous thing in all circumstances from the Unionist standpoint.” London, September 4. King Edward has left Marieubad ou his way home. Dr Ott has been authorised to inlorm Reuter’s Agency that the King is in perfect health and strength, equal to that of a sound man ten years his junior. His Majesty astonishes medical men by his robust constitution and vigour. New York, September 3. Forty-six representatives ot the Chambers of Commerce of Tokio, Osaka, and Kioto have arrived at Seattle, Washington Territory, on a three months’ visit to America. The visit is made with the view of strengthening the bonds of friendship and promoting trade between the two countries.
