SHELLED BY MISTAKE.
Paris, September i
While the- French Northern Squadron was practising off Quiberon, on the west coast of France the armoured cruiser Gloire (which carries 7.6-iuch and 6.4-inch guns), through au error in direction, fired six shells at the armoured cruiser Marseillaise. One of the shells pierced the hull of the Marseillaise, and exploded, but the damage caused was slight. [The Marseillaise, which is of the same type as the Gloire, has a cuirass of Harveyed steel arranged in two strakes. The strake on the water-line (generally known as the belt) is 6in thick amidships, and tapers to qin at bow and stern. Above this is another armoured strake siu amidships and tapering to ein at the ends. A large part of the side of the Marseillaise is, however, unarraoured. It is not clear what shell was- fired, nor what thickness of armour it pierced —if, indeed, it struck armour at all ]
