ATHLETICS.
A. B. Postle, the Australian sprint champion, who recently toured Great Britain and South Africa, and defeated the best men offering in those countries, has written to Mr Woods, president of the New Zealand Athletic Union, stating that he intends to put in a season in New Zealand and will arrive in November, compete at' all the chief meetings and leave again for Australia about April. Providing that satisfactory arrangements can be made for the lighting up of the Park, for the proposed gaslight meeting it is the intention of the local Athletic Club to endeavour to get Postle to compete in the proposed Sheffield Handicap, and thus give local sports a chance of seeing one of the fastest 120yds men the world ■has produced. Mr S. Messena has signified his intention of presenting a cup value £5 ss, to the local Athletic Club, as a prize in a 120yds race between the professional scullers, to be run at proposed gaslight meeting.
