MANAUWATU COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held yesterday. Present: —Crs. J. G. Wilson (chairman), Henson, Kendall, Dalton, Masters, McKenzie and W. E. Barber.

The following letters were dealt with :

From the Treasury, forwarding os rod, tramway receipts. From same, stating that the loan of for drainage of southern portion of Block I. Sandy Survey District and Beach road, was available.

From the Horowhenua County Council, directing attention to the cutting up of the roads between Shannon and the bridge by metaling contractors. From Foxton Racing Club, asking permission to remove a few loads of soil from the road near Foxton.

It was decided to inform the Horowhenua County Council that the metalling contractors would be compelled to repair any damage done to the Foxton-Shannon road.

The Council decided to apply for a renewal of the right for fiv£ years to a private siding at Himatangi. The Chairman and Cr Masters were authorised to sign the applicationAccounts totalling 19s 3d were passed for payment. The Tramway Manager reported that the credit balance for the month was 16s 1 id, including 7s for old rails. The traffic had been good for this time of year, the principal items being: Grain 814 tons, merchandise tons, manure 20 tons, metal 330 yds, old rails 241, fares ,£8 3s id. The manager suggested that the balance of the 7s, for sleepers, be spent in timber, and the Council get the Powellising done itself. He also suggested that the work of carting metal from the pit be gone on with now, so that such traffic could be stopped during the summer mouths, to enable the trucks to be used for the wool traffic.

The following alterations were made in the rate roll: —

M. A. Austin to Coley and Bock, section 210, part section 465, section 248, Foxton; G. T. Woodroofe to B. E. Austin, sections x and 2, 433, 457, 545, 456, 458 and 459, block 6, Mount Robinson. The Overseer reported as follows in reference to the Awahou riding The usual repairs have been effected on the FoxtonShannon road and Kari Kari road in the shape of carting metal and filling in the ruts. The recent flood in the Manawtau river overflowed at Burr’s point and scoured off a considerable quantity of metal from the Shannon road, and in other places a great quantiy of silt is deposited on the road, making it sloppy and heavy for traffic. From Mr Smith’s down to the bridge, where the bank is kept in good order, there was no flood water on the road. I would recommend the Council to form up the road known as Smith’s road with the grader as soon as the ground is workable.
