FOOTPATHS.

At Monday’s Council meeting Cr Speirs moved that a footpath be formed on both sides of the Uadies Mile, Robinson Street and Norbiton Road, and that the work be referred to the Public Works Committee with instructions to have it carried out.

In speaking to the motion he said that his reason for moving that paths be formed on both sides of the street was that there would be very little difference in the cost of one side or both as the work would be done with a plough, and they could go up one side of the street and down the othe. The wet weather during the past few weeks had shown what a necessity there was for footpaths and he urged that footpath construe* tion be pushed on with at once. The motion was seconded by Cr Gibbs. Cr Ross sugested that other streets be added to the motion. Cr Robinson contended that a footpath on one side of the street was sufficient. If the two sides were formed it would take much longer to carry the whole work out. Crs Jenks, hevett, Rimmerrand the Mayor were also of opinion that one footpath would be sufficient at present. The motion was carried with the addition of the following : That if the Public Works Committee consider one side sufficient, only one side be lormed.
