UNREQUITED LOVE.
Auckland, August 2
Unrequited love led a man named Charles Barry McCarthy to commit suicide this evening. McCarthy returned from England yesterday, and on arrival found that the young lady to whom he regarded himself as “engaged” had since their parting formed another attachment.
East night he is said to have pleaded with her to renew the gagement, but in vain, and this afternoon he called upon her tor the same purpose and the lady again refused him. He asked for a cup of tea and for some writing materials. These were provided, and he was left alone. Presently groans were heard, and rushing into the room the family found McCarthy was dying. He expired in about half-au-hour. It is believed to took prussic acid. A note on the table read : —“I have lived six years for this girl. I wish to say goodbye-’’ It is denied by the girl’s parents and by the girl herself that she was engaged to McCarthy. “They were fond of one another some years ago,” said the mother, “but none of us ever regarded it seriously.”
