FLOODS IN THE MANAWATU.

TRAIN SERVICE INTERFERED WITH.

Owing to the heavy rains during the past week the > Manawatu river is flooded. The train to Palmerston this morning was unable to get through owing to the flood waters being over the line between Oroua Bridge and Tiakitahuna. The line is under water for a distance of about three miles. At present it is impossible to ascertain whether the line is

damaged to any extent, but in any case there will be no train service between Foxton and Palmerston until the water subsides. In the meantime the Railway Department have arranged for the trains to leave Foxton and Palmerston at the usual times, but passengers etc. ''■’‘"■■'can only be conveyed as far as Oroua Bridge from this end and Tiakitahuna from the other. All - mails are being forwarded via Devin. The Shannon road is also blocked, but the Whirokino service is still open. All the lowlying land along the river between Oroua Bridge and Whirokino is under water. The morning train between Palmerston and Wellington was held up yesterday for two hours owing to a culvert being swept away near Dinton. Owing to slips in the Manawatu Gorge the train service between Palmerston and Woodville was held up yesterday, passengers having to be transhipped. The slips have now been cleared away and the service was continued this morning.

Telegrams received from Woodville this morning state that the river there has dropped four feet.
