S.S. HIMATANGI ASHORE.

ATTEMPTS TOREFLOAT HER. PORTION OF THE CARGO JETTISONED. On'Saturday morning, the s.s. Himatangi, coal'-laden, while attempting to take the bar, went ashore on the South Spit. In taking the bar she apparently slewed to starboard, and ran ashore, and now lies with her bow facing the river in a north-easterly position, the bow being practically afloat at high-water* but the stern is embedded in the san anddis almost high and dry at low-water. The Himatangi arrived on Saturday morning from Greymouth, laden with 220 tons of State coal. The s.s. Queen of the South and s.s. Wootton arrived at the bar shortly after. The Himatangi was the first to attempt to enter the river and ran ashore as above stated. The other two steamers successfully negotiated the bar. On Saturday evening the first attempt was made to refloat her without success. .On Sunday morning the s.s. Queen of the South made an unsuccessful attempt to tow her off and it was then decided to lighten her by jettisoning some of her cargo. About 100 tons of coal were thrown overboard on Sunday and although attempts to refloat her have been made at every tide since, they have been unsuccessful and she is still lying in the same position. A further attempt will be made to-morrow to tow her out to sea.

The weather was too rough this morning for the Queen to make any attempt to tow her. Captain Manly is in charge of the stranded vessel and Mr Signal is supervising the salving.
