ARBOR DAY.
To-morrow is Arbor Day,.. The Borough Council decided not to let it pass this year without carrying out a certain amount of tree planting. At a meeting [recently held it was decided to plant ornamental trees in Victoria Park. The Mayor, each Councillor and the Town Clerk decided to donate three selected trees each. The trees have arrived and the borough roadmen are digging the holes today in readiness for to-morrow’s planting, The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. It was decided to allow the planting to be done by the elder scholars of the State School.
The children will assemble at the school at 1.30 p.m. and march in procession to the Park, headed by the Borough Band. After the planting is completed the children will be regaled with sweets, and disperse. The Reserves Committee have decided to plant two rows of trees at the foot of the slope of the bill in the Park to replace others cut down in the. vicinity of Russell Street gate, some wattles will be planted in one corner and ornamental planes near the seats, and macrocarpas in the avenue leading from the Park Street gate.
