THE FREEZING WORK SITE.
DISCUSSED BY THE BOUR BOARD,-
LATE CHAIRMAN’S ACTION ENDORSED.
The site for the proposed freezing works near the Heads, which was offered by the late chairman of the Board to the promoters of the movement, .came up for discussion at last night’s meeting. It was pointed out that a special 1 committee of the company had I been set up to inspect the sites under offer and report on same. The Chairman said that members of the Board had inspected the reserve but had not decided an

During the discussion followed, Mr Nash stronglj tested against erecting works near the sea-side resort. It would drive settlement away and cause sharks to come up the river. Why not erect the works near the flaxmills site ? j Mr Wood said he would not support the giving of a site for freezing works. He considered the Board could not legally give a site. The land would have to be put up to public tender.
Mr Wilson contended that the erection of freezing works at Castlecliffe (Wanganui) had promoted settlement there. The works if erected at Foxton would treble the traffic of the port and greatly increase the revenue of the Board. i
The Chairman said that it was ■ ridiculous to say that the works if erected would bring sharks up the * river.
A brief dessertatiou on sharks then followed between Chairman and Mr Nash.
Mr Wood said that persons visiting the seaside would not care about the stench from freejJH works, besides it would rats. —The speaker was asked whether that argument obtained in regard to the Lougburn Works?
Mr Gardener remarked that use was second nature!
The resolution was carried, Messrs Nash and Wood diss f and asked that their protest isßecorded on the minutes. . -
The Chairman was. authorised to select a site for the proposed works and said that he would use his discretion and see that the site for the works was not at anyone’s back door.
