GENERAL CABLES.

Brisbane, June 27.

During the voyage from Singapore of the Dutch mail steamer, Van Spilbegen (which went ashore in Torres Straits, and was refloated after jettisoning 400 tons of oil), a lady passenger, Mrs Wingfield, had her throat cut and was robbed of some belongings by two men who entered her cabin. The wound is not serious.

The captain immediately found out the culprits by marshalling the crew, and picking out a man whose heart was beating abnormally.! The man confessed, and he and another have been committed for trial charged with the crime.

Sydney, June 27

As the result of a sailors’ quarrel at Newcastle, one, named Gustavson, fatally stabbed a companion named Mattlin.

London, June 27,

From 1869 Canada’s imports from Britain have fallen from 56 to per cent., while imports from "the United States have advanced from 34 to 60 per cent. An investigation has been made on behalf of the Board of Trade, and the increase is attributed to the Americans keeping in closer touch with the Canadian market, and their greater readiness to adapt themselves to Canada’s requirements.
