CRICKET.
The second test match between the Australians and an All-Eng-land team began at Lords on Monday. Hopkins, Carkeek, Whitty, Hartigan and O’Connor were omitted from the Australian team. Noble won the toss and sent the Englishmen to the wickets. The wicket was difficult at first, but less treacherous than was expected. England’s first innings , realised 269 (King 60, Lilley 47, and Tyldesley 46 being the chief scorers). For Australia, Cotter “bagged” four wickets at a cost of 80 runs, Noble 3 for 42, and Laver 3 for 75.
The Australians began their second innings on an improved wicket. The innings closed for 350 of which the brilliant' young Victorian Ransford scored 143 not out, Bardsley 46 was the next highest scorer. Of the English bowlers Relf (who last year acted as coach to one of the Auckland Clubs, and represented Auckland in inter-provincial matches) was the most successful, securing five wickets at a cost of 85 runs, Hirst accounted for three wickets for 83 runs and King one for 99. England in their second innings have lost one wicket for 16.
