BEAUTIFYING THE BOROUGH.
At last night’s Council meeting, Cr Ross brought up the question of beautilying the borough streets by planting ornamental trees and shrubs. He was of opinion that for the very small expense it would entail, the trees would be a great improvement to the town. He moved that the Council plant ornamental trees along the sides of all streets over a chain wide, and a commencement be made this season on Clyde and Park Streets, the said trees to be protected by three posts and rails of five feet in height, those in Clyde Street to be painted white and erected of dressed timber. The streets to be planted afterwards to be decided on by the Council. The motion was seconded by Cr Rimmer. Cr Coley considered that trees in the streets were not required. In Wanganui, where trees had been planted, it cost the Council a certain amount of money to keep the leaves out of the gutters. He would oppose the motion. Cr Jenks said that he was against planting trees, especially in Clyde Street. He referred to the proposition as absolute rot, and if trees were planted in Clyde Street he would chop them down. Cr Adams said he would support the motion. He considered that it was an admirable suggestion. They could get over the question of cleaning up leaves, by planting trees that do not cast their leaves. He did not think that the cost would be great as he thought that suitable trees could be obtained from the State farms by paying the railway freight.
Cr Eevett said he favoured beautification. He would like to see trees planted in the wide streets. It they were planted in the Avenue he said that he would not be like George Washington, he would not cut them down. He considered a start should be made next Arbor Day. Crs Gibbs and Speirs also spoke in favour of the motion, the latter asking if the work could be carried out with reserves money. The Mayor said the money would have to come out of the general account.
The motion on being put was carried.
