A COSTLY FICTION.
BREACH OF THE ELECTORAL ACT. James Groves, otherwise known as James Russell, received a memorable lesson at Stratford, before a bench of. Justices, 011 Friday. He was charged with (i) having signed a fictitious name to a claim for electoral enrolment, and (2) with having caused a fictitious name to be inserted on the electoral roll. The evidence showed that he had variously styled himself James Groves and James Russell. After entering a conviction, reports the Stratford Post, the Bench stated that in view of the fact that the purity of the electoral rolls was questioned throughout the Dominion, it considered the offence a serious one. A fine of ,£5, with costs, £6 4s was inflicted on the first charge, an order for costs of £3 10s on the second charge was made. The culprit made himself liable to a fine of .£SO.
