LIBRARY COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the Public Library Committee was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor, and Crs Levett, Rae-Howard, and Wm. Ross. An apology was received from Cr Ur. Adams. The custodian’s report stated what work had been carried out during the past quarter ; the books had been relabelled ; the subscribers totalled 26 ; the report concluded by stating that several magazines had been stolen from the reading-room, consequently they had been kept on the library table until asked for; many weekly papers still continue to be stolen and mutilated. —The Committee decided that it could not purchase the books under offer trom Mr Baker. —It was decided to place notices on the walls of the reading-room, warning the public against stealing or mutilating magazines or papers.—The report of the librarian was received. —It was decided to purchase 100 new books, and the meeting rose.
