CORRESPONDENCE.
LEVIN TO MARTON RAILWAY.
[TO THK KDITOR.J Sir, —I see in a recent issue of your paper that you challenge proof for two statements made by Palmerston residents, viz., That Foxton is well supplied by train service, and that the settlers mainly affected by the proposed Levin to Greatford line do not want it. Well, sir, as regards the first statement: You can go to “ Palmerston ” by rail every day, save Sunday, and what more do want ? When you die, you can go to heaven —or the other place, as the case may be—and in the meantime you can go by rail to “ Palmerston ” every day. What more do you want ? Re the second statement. If a farmer along much of the route of proposed line desires to send to Wellington, say pigs for argument, he must cart them all the way to Oroua Bridge, then send them miles in the opposite direction to Wellington as far as Eongburn, and have them hung up there for a day, owing to congested traffic (which ofter occurs), before he can get them on the direct line to Wellington. Again, if a person in Sanson requires a truck of timber, via the Main Trunk Line, instead of coming straight through, it must go 20 miles out ot its course around through “ Palmeiston,” for the glory and honour ot coming through “ The Square.'' The settlers on the route of the proposed line do not want it. ‘ ‘ Palmerston ” says so. If they wish to go to Wellington on biz, they would rather get up early in the morning and byke to Shannon, Longburn, or “PalmerstonNqrth,” than to go direct by the proposed line. Surely, sir, you can give credit to the members of the Palmerston Noith Chamber of Commerce and Borough Council, of running your little town and telling you your needs and requirements better than you can yourself! They can “tell’’you anything at all —from the best way to raise funds for a Dreadnought, down to what the Governor should eat for breakfast, but lor proof,— well, that is another thing altogether; it is out of their line. —I am, etc., Himatangi.
