FALSE PRETENCES.

John Percival Hughes, who hung out his sign for a brief period in Foxton as a presser and cleaner, is under arrest at Marton, charged with attempting to procure goods by means of a valueless cheque. Accused pleaded not guilty, and stated that he had been drinking, and did not remember anything of which he was charged. He was committed for trial. Bail was granted, self in and two sureties of each. He is also charged with the theft of a horse and trap.
