DIVERTING THE COAL TRADE?

A rumour was mentioned at yesterday’s meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board to the effect that the Railway Department intended to divert its coal trade from the local port. If this rumour has any foundation in fact it will mean a very serious drawback to the local port. At present the rumour lacks confirmation. The only colour we can give to the rumour is that coal can be landed in Wellington at a cheaper rate than through the local port and since the Government has acquired the Mauawatu line it is a question as to which is the more economical means of transport. It is problematical whether railway haulage over the steep Paekakariki grade, and wear and tear of rolling slock can hope to successfully compete with steamer transit. We wou’d not like to suggest that the rumour is circulated in order to scare the Harbour Board. We agree with Mr Wood that if the rumour is well-founded it affords further reason for the Railway Department handing over the wharfage dues to the Board. The Harbour Board has acted wisely in communicating with the Department on the subject and the reply will be awaited with interest.
