A RAILWAY TRAGEDY.
MAN KILLED BY EXPRESS. The New Plymouth express was running north through Paraparaumu on Thursday at a fast pace when a bump was felt as though the engine had gone over something. The brakes were immediately applied and on inspection the line was found to be literally strewn with human remains—a man had been cut into ribbons by the heavy express travelling at 30 miles an hour. At an inquest held at Paraparaumu during the afternoon Mr Nation, J.P., as coroner, the victim proved to have been Joseph Thawley, aged 68, a Wellington resident of 25 years’ standing, who had been staying with his wife at Paraparaumu for his health. His sons are in business at Wellington as grocers.
Messrs Ramsford, Williamson and Wise deposed to having seen deceased deliberately throw himself in front of the train. Driver Davidson and Fireman Langford never saw him. A verdict of suicide while temporarily insane was recorded.
