LIVELY MEETING AT CHRISTCHURCH.

The meeting convened in Christchurch by the Navy League in support of the Government’s offer to Britain of a Dreadnought, was very stormy. Quite 4000 people were present, and none of the speakers could be heard for continued groaning and cheering. Alter a show of hands called by notification on a black board, the motion was declared carried. The interrupters would not allow Bishop Julius or Bishop Grimes to speak, and cheered Mr T. E. Taylor, M.P., but when he endeavoured to speak the disturbance doubled. A Union Jack was snatched off the platform and before it could be rescued, was torn to shreds and trampled under foot. Eventually, after a fight in which hundreds took part, it was rescued and hoisted on the platform. Another fight took place for possession of a black-board, and the meeting, broke up in great confusion, thousands remaining cheering and hooting till the lights were put out. A patriotic meet ing was afterwards held in the Square.
