BOROUGH SANITARY MATTERS.
CONTRACTOR’S SALARY INCREASED. At Tuesday night’s meeting of the Borough Council a letter was received from the sanitary contractor, asking for an increase in wages. He stated that the wages received, £<\ per week, were not sufficient for two married men. Cr Jenks said that although he considered that the contractor was entitled to a rise, he thought the matter should be left for the new Council to deal with. Cr Stiles said that it should be dealt with at once. The sanitary rate had been raised to provide for an increase in wages. If they did not increase the contractor’s wages, it would not be fair to strike the higher rate, and the Council should go back to the old system.
Cr Coley considered that the matter should be dealt with at once. The contractor stated that an assistant had to be paid, but he must remember that the Council only employed one man at £4 per week. However, if the Council thought that he was entitled to an increase, and that the money was available he would be in favour of increasing the wages to £5 per week.
Cr Jenks said that the contractor was doing his work well, and if the wages were not sufficient the Council should make them so. He moved that the salary of the nightman be raised by one pound per week. Seconded by Cr White and carried
