FLAXMILLING INDUSTRY.
RUMOURED DOCK OUT. It is rumoured that a lock-out has taken place owing to the proposed introduction of the contract system into flaxmilling. The facts, as far as we can gather are as follows: Five of Messrs Broad and Reeves scutchers were offered contracts approximating fifty tons of dry fibre for scutching and pressing at 22s 6d per ton. As the present award rates for scutching and pressing is 28s per ton the men declined to accept the lower price. They were then told that services were no longer requirSi" as the firm had men ready to take the contract at the rate offered. We understand that further action on the part of the men is pending and it would certainly seem that should the legality of the suggested contract system be upheld the existing award will be worth exactly the value of paper upon which it is printed.
