THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
We understand that the Seifert Flaxdressiug Co. are about to close down three of the strippers at their Miranui mill. This was done at about the same time last year, and it will also be necessary to follow the same course for the next two seasons, so as to give the leaf the necessary time to mature. After that time there will be sufficient flax on the estate to keep the six strippers running throughout the season. The Koputarua Fibre Co., will also close their two mills at the end of the present mouth for the same reason.
Messrs R. Gardner and Sons, at Koputarua, are “cutout” of green leaf and will close down shortly. There will not be sufficient flax for this mill to commence again for the next two seasons. As usual Messrs A. Seifert and Co.’s Paiaka Mill will close down until next season. This is found necessary at about the same time each year owing to the shortness of leaf and also to the risk from floods, there being no high land available for paddockiug. Mr Geo. Seifert, of Tokomaru, intends putting in two extra strippers next season. At present he is installing a patent scutcher at his Maru Mill.
