CRICKET.

Wednesday’s match completed the competition for the Austin Shield. There was another match set down for next Wednesdaj*, between Debaters and Himataugi, but the Debaters have given notice of their intention to forfeit. The competition this year was again won by’the Foxton Club, and as the conditions of the competition were that the Shield was to be won twice in succession or three times at intervals, and it has now been won in two successive years by the Foxton Club it becomes the sole property of that Club. It is rather unfortunate that such a valuable trophy should be won outright by any one club. It would have been far better if the trophyhad been given to the Association for competition each year, to be held by the winning club each season. However, it is rumoured that the Foxton Club intend giving the Shield back to the Association to be competed for in this manner. The points scored by each club were —Foxton ispts, Himatangi 8 and Debaters 3. The'quality of the cricket this season shows a large improvement both in batting and bowling on that of last. On the other hand the fielding appears to be getting worse, a large number of catches being missed iu almost every match during the season. Among the batsmen Baillie is in a class by himself, finishing up with an average of 41.5 runs per innings. The following are the batting and bowling averages of all players who have taken part in three or more Shield matches during the season. The batting averages are complete, but the bowling analysis were not taken in two matches and could not be included : BATTING. §I - | r-> fj} jj rtj a%g H g ■+J .F 6 0 ’j 0> 6 p .?
