THE MAYORALTY.
A PETi’iTON is in circulation asking Mr W. Ross to allow himself to be nominated for the position of Mayor. At present we know of no more capable man for the position in Foxton, and we hope that Mr Ross will graciously accede to the request. We know that Mr Ross is a very busy man and that much of his time is taken up with affairs of business. Is it not a fact, however, that the busy man is the best man for such a position ? True citizenship demands self-sacrifice, and often men who serve in high places aie subjected to the jibes and insults of the foolish and ignorant, yet they are able to keep such drawbacks in the rear, because they are actuated by higher motives —of rendering service for the welfare of their fellows. We are pleased that certain of our townsmen are desirous of offering the honoured position to Mr Ross, because Foxton owes much to this gentleman’s industry. We wish there were a few more such men in our community. Anyhow, we hope to be able to say in a future issue that Mr Ross has acceded to the request, for then nut only would we gain from a civic point of view, but the Harbour Board would possess a member who would do honour to the position. We are not given to fulsome flattery but we think our readers will agree that our remarks meet with their approval.
