HEMP AND TOW EXPORTS.
Returns compiled by the Chief Fibre Expert, Mr Fulton, of the hemp and tow exported during the mouth of February show a considerable falling-off compared with the corresponding period of 1908, although there was an increase for February over January, due mainly to the good weather conditions. The output graded for last month amounted to 8788 bales, or 5040 bales less than for February, 1908. The twelve months ending February, 1909, showed a falling-off of the product exported of 63,775 bales, the figures being:—Year ended February, 1909, 7 8 .573 bales; year ending February 1908, 142,348, With regard to tow, which was graded for the first time last month, 1603 bales passed through the graders’ hands. Of this 47 were No. 1, 455 No. 2 and 1063 No. 3, while 38 were condemned. The Wellington shipments of hemp amounted to 3708 bales for the month, compared with 5096 bales for the same month last year.
