LICENSING BENCH ELECTION.
Results for Manawatu.
The following is the result of the polling on Tuesday for the election'of a licensing Bench for Manawatu. It will be noticed that a very small percentage of votes were recorded. This was due to the fact that no particular issues were at stake. The No-License Party selected five candidates out of the seven nominated, of which three w ere returned, namely, Messrs Simpson, Lethbridge and Perry. The two others who were successful were Messrs Purnell and Sutcliffe. The defeated candidates were Messrs Hornblow and Bowater. The latter was a member of the late committee. The trade, in the principal centres took a keener interest in the contest than did the No-Ltcense Party ’ Rongotea stood out solid for the no-liceuse ticket. They do not forget the past. Of the elected members, Messrs Simpson and Perry were re-elected. The former has been a member of the Bench since 1897. The first meeting of the Bench will be held in June next. At Palmerston North the poll resulted in the election of four of the Liquor Party’s ticket, and one No-liceuse candidate (Mr Matheson), those elected being Messrs C. Dunk, S. W. Luxford, H. T. Palmer, Wm. Beck, and D. Mathesou. The Oroua poll resulted in the return of the trade ticket, the following being elected : —Messrs Goodbehere, Bruce. Bailey, McBeth and Bartholomew. For OtakiMessrs McLeavey, Freeman, Ling, Tompsitt and O’Connor were elected- These were all on the trade ticket. Greymouth, March 9. The following were elected; Messrs Kilgour, James, Bignell, Flynn, and Irvine. There were eight candidates. Christchurch, March 9. The Avon Licensing Committee election resulted in No-license candidates being returned at Riccarton, and at Lyttelton Moderate candidates were returned. Nelson, March 6. Only moderate interest was taken in the Licensing Committee elections, which resulted in the return of the following out of twelve candidates: H. Atmore, T. Pettit, P. Watson, R. McLaren (all in favour of 10 o’clock closing) and P. Best (Moderate) Dunedin, March 9. Considerable interest was taken in licensing matters to-day, each side being represented by live candidates. The result saw the No-license party returned by a fairly substantial majority. In Dunedin South a No-liceuse committee was also elected. Wellington, March 9. The Alliance party did not run a “ticket” for the Hutt licensing contest, and there was little in-
terest in the election. The old committee was re-elected, namely, W, Inglis, J. Cotton, H- E. Ryder, O. Stevens, J. Cuddy. Auckland, March 9. The election of a Licensing Committee resulted, after one of the keenest contests on record in the defeat of the candidates pledged to a maximum reduction of licenses which would have entailed the closing of 14 hotels. The Citizens’ League (Moderate) ticket was returned, the successful candidates being Messrs Bagnall, Holland, Mennie, Somers, and Dr. King. Auckland, to In the Manukau poll/ two tickets were put forward, the result depending on whether two or three hotels should be closed.. With seventeen small returns to come, and very close voting, Scott and Westuey (Temperance) head the list. The other temperance candidates are fifth, seventh, and ninth respectively. Woodville, March io. The lollowiug have been elected to the Licensing Committee : Messrs Hawkins, Harris, Hughes, Norrell. and Harding. Four were on the no-license ticket. Nelson, March io. The No-license party with io o’clock closing as their ticket, carried all before them at the licensing poll yesterday. Of votes, 6182 were polled for 10 o’clock straight out and 3939 for the moderate ticket, which had not specified its opinion on the hour of closing. Marton, March 10. The following were elected for Raugitikei:—Messrs Cole, Simpson, Howie, Behan, and James. This represents a majority for the Moderate party.
