SCHOOL PRIZE DISTRIBUTION.
The prize-giving ceremony in connection with the local State school took place on Thursday afternoon. The children were assembled for the ceremony in the spacious quadrangle. The prizes were distributed by Mr Edward Newman M.P., who was briefly introduced to the children by Mr Hornblow, chairman of committee. There were also present Mr Alf. Fraser (member of the Board), the Rev. Mr Aitken and Mr Read (members of committee). Before awarding the prizes Mr Newman spoke encouragingly to the children and urged those who had not been successful in obtaining a prize not to be discouraged. The Chairman and Messrs Fraser and Rev. Mr Aitken also briefly addressed the scholars. Cheers were given for the member, donors of prizes, committee and teaching staff and the ceremony concluded with the singing of the National Anthem. The following is a list of the prize winners: —
St. VI. Proficiency James Hennessy 1 and special, Weston Barber 2.
St. V. Proficiency—Myra Wanklyn 1, Elsie Nye 2. St. IV. Proficiency Ellen Skillen 1, Ethel Spring 2, Eric Mackie 3. St. HI. — Edgar McEwan 1. Harry Berthold 2, St. II. —Henry McDonnell 1, Kathleen Barber 2.
St. I. —Marion Eevett t, Alfred Arbon 2.
P, 3. —Avis Stiles 1, Eily Johnston 2.
The attendance prizes were won by the following, the three first named having made the full attendances, thus carrying off Mr Alf. Fraser’s two specials and the committee’s special prize. Jeannie McKuight 428, Ellen Skillen 428, Wm. Speirs 428, Thos. Levett 427, John Vidulich 425, Antonio Vidulich 424, Olive Nye 424, Henry Berthold 423, Grace Pearce 423, Clifford Podmore 422, Ivy Richmond 422, Roger Hynes 421, Lily Johnston 42 1, Eric Mackie 420. The Chairman expressed pleasure at seeing the Maori children in attendance, some of whom came at great inconvenience, having to cross the river in boats. He would be pleased to award a prize to each Maori scholar.
