Mr J. A. Nash "has consented to stand for re-election as Mayor of Palmerston. Mr W. T. Wood is also a candidate.
Mr Hennessy has so far recovered from his recent indisposition as to be able to get about again.
The Gisborne Times reports that Mr G. How Chow, formerly owner of ■ the Karaka Hotel, Poverty Bay, who returned to China about two years ago and was seized by Chinese brigands, is returning to New Zealand. It is stated that his captors obtained a very large ransom. Mr A. E. Remington, M.P. for Rangitikei, and Mrs Remington returned to Wellington on Wednesday from a thirteen weeks’ visit to Australian States. Mr Remington combined pleasure with a great deal of political business, securing information which will be of service in discussing many questions likely to come before Parliament next session. The Hutchison incident will also be revived and explained away as a side issue.
Sergeant Forster, of the Dunedin Police Force, and late of Foxton, who has been transferred to Petone, was on Tuesday evening presented by his brother sergeants with a handsome case of pipes. The presentation was made by Station-sergeant King, who referred to the good-fellowship that had existed between Sergeant Forster and his brother officers. Sergeants Emerson and Crawford also made most kindly reference to Sergeant Forster, who acknowledged the gift in feeling terms.
