The following recipe for bottling tomatoes, should be welcome at the present time : —-Put one quart or more of water in a pan, one tablespoon of vinegar, and salt to taste; let it boil, then put in the tomatoes whole. When fairly soft put into bottles, fill up with juice, and screw down. Tomatoes must be perfectly sound and bottles air-tight. A fine crop of barley has been threshed on Mr James Guild’s Trevena Farm, Milford, Temuka. From 106 acres 7540 bushels were got, giving an average of over 71 bushels to the acre. A crop of wheat on the show grounds paddock at Winchester yielded 40 bushels to the acre. The weather has been most favourable for harvesting, and stacks are to be seen all over the country. Admiral L,ord Charles Beresford, commanding the Channel Fleet, has presented a bulldog pup to each of the battleships Commonwealth, New Zealand, Dominion and Britannia, and recently he made the following signal to the captains : —“ I have not yet named the bulldog pups, but I am calling them my ‘ battleship breed.’ The pedigree of these pups will be sent to ships companies later, but the owner of the sire has refused for him.”

Mr G. Coley informs us that two sharks were captured at the beach recently, one about sft and the other 12ft in length.

The tides and other circumstances will prevent the State School children holding the picnic at the beach on Friday next. A meeting of the committee will be held to-morrow night to decide the matter.

The continued spell of dry weather is fast drying up the pastures on the open and coastal farms in Taranaki, and farmers are anxiously waiting for rain. The root crops are forward and good, the turnips being free from the fly. In the higher bush country grass is very plentiful and green. Farmers who have harvested their winter fodder during the past month have had the best of weather conditions, the hay crops especially being put in sweet and fresh.
