WRECK OF THE S.S. PENGUIN.
Boat load of Passengers Missing. (Special to Herald.) Wellington, This Day.
The s.s. Penguin was wrecked last night on the voyage from Nelson to Picton oil Terawhiti.
Twenty of the passengers and crew were landed safely. One boat containing women and children is missing.
Postmaster at Picton has been informed by Captain Carey of the s.s. Blenheim that an extraordinary current was running last night along the coast and both his steamer and the s.s. Opawa were carried miles northward. It is surmised that this current is responsible for the wreck of the Penguin.
The names of those saved are : M. Hannan, Watkins, Jack, Robt. Ellison, W. H. Green, Gerald Bridge, T. Allan, Matthews, F. Shaw, L. T. Hogg, G. Perkins, Briggs, Millar and C. E. Downes, and 16 of the crew. v The names of the crew are; Capt. Naylor, Luke, Thompson, Power, R. Watts, Keyes, Hall, C. Jones, W. Rees, D. McCormack, D. Francis, Stewart, Lynn, Cook, Jackson, Farrell, Snellgrove, Wicktoun and Pierre.
The Nelson passengers are; Misses Loomer, Lowman, Symons, Jennings, Maguire, Mesdames J. Rurtherford, Jacka, Symons, and maid, Loomer and child, Messrs Lowman, Johnstone, Shroader, Chappell, Rutherford, Moslens, Berkett and Maguire. Passengers from Picton ; Messrs Underwood, Bridge, Noel, White, Ellis, Matthews, Shaw, C. Hall, Bird, Riggs, Millar, Allcroft, Ribbands, McAlley, Wenyss and Mrs Hale. Steerage passengers, Messrs Hogg and Holmes and two men without tickets.
