KING AND KAISER.
Candid Comparison by a Boer
Journal
. Some plain speaking distinguishes an article on “The British King,” which appeared in De Transvaler (Johannesburg) on 13th November. In the first place the article emphasises the nationality of the Boer race and language under the protection of the British flag, and then proceeds : “ Apart from these considerations the Dutch have special reason to respect the person of King Edward. Plis Majesty’s conduct at the present moment stands out in magnificent contrast above that of the German Emperor, _ whose recent utterances have given us all a thorough insight into his Germanic Majesty’s heart and inwardness.
“ We have never known the King to utter anything that was ungentlemauly or in the least calculated to offend the feelings of the subjects of other Monarchs, not to mention his own. His Majesty has too much good sense for that, and is too thorough a gentleman. Nor have we known him to play the Judas towards a people struggling for their independence and the freedom of their Patherland. He is too gallant a lord for that. We have not known him to place any of his Ministers in the painful position in which Prince Bulow finds himself, nor to make his nation a laughing stock, as the Kaiser has done.
“We deeply sympathise with the German nation. Their Emperor has done them a bad turn indeed. Comparisons are odious, and we have particular delight in making this comparison between the King of England and the Kaiser as odious as we can very well make it. The King fought us, and put us under. He did so in the face of the world* The Kaiser pretended to be our friend, and secretly he planned our destruction as a Republican nation.
“The Boers are not slow to notice this contrast between the two Monarchs, and they silently bless God that they have at least no Kaiser’s birthday to celebrate !”
