AN EXCITING CHASE.
An exciting chase by the police
is recorded by, the Cromwell Argus.
The police wanted a young man of appearance, who reached Cromwell for the races, ■ and caused quite a topic of conversation and excitement* by victimising several local business people and private persons, besides giving the police a stirring time. He left there in a hurry on the day of the races. The constable at Alexandra interviewed him there and intended arresting him, but the young iellow got away and doubled back, crossing in the Punt dredge boat at the midnight change of shifts, stayed at Eowburn that night, and made for Queensbury next morning. Constable Bradley then got 6u his trail, drove to Queensberry, and as he went into the yard the hunted one made away and crossed by the chair
(which crosses the river on a wire cable) near the hotel, tying it on -Hfhe opposite side just as the con•stable reached it, thus preventing him from getting over, as it meant about a 2 0 mile journey to get round',' he had a good start. After a fruitless search for a couple of days about the Tarras and Hawea, Sergeant Crawford, from Clyde, and Constable Johnston, of Pembroke, followed on the trail to the head of Lake Wanaka, and made an arrest at the Haast Pass, the chase occupying over a Week from the time he was missed at Alexandra.
