THE ITALIAN EARTHQUAKE.
Romk, January 11
A woman and child were rescued alive from the ruins at Messina yesterday. Bluejackets, working under the British military attache, extricated Mrs Ogston’s body. The only buildings intact at Reggio were built on Dr Capacci’s plan in 1906 with hollow bricks and vertical and horizontal wires in the brick-work, giving great elasticity. Ameican donations to the relief fund total ,£720,000. The Mansion House fund is 000. The Ophir, on learning of the disaster when approaching Italy, made every preparation to assist the sufferers. The second-class passengers were quartered with the first, and the second-class saloons and smoking-rooms were converted into hospitals. High tributes are paid to the assistance rendered by everybody aboard.
