FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Fox ton Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last night, to fix the weekly half-holiday for the borough for the present year. Present: —His Worship'the Mayor (B, G. Gower Esq.), CrsHennessy, Coley, White, Frankland, Jenks and Stiles. It was resolved on the motion of Cr Jenks, seconded by Cr Hennessy, that the statutory halfholiday for Foxton be fixed lor Wednesday afternoon in each week.

After the special meeting, the ordinary monthly meeting was held.

The minutes of the previous, ordinary, and one special meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read from the Feilding Secretary of the A. and ‘ P. Association, asking that the business people of Foxton close their premises on the day of the Show. —No action taken.

From the local agent of the New Zealand Shipping Co., pointing out that the sand drift complained of did not take place until the bank was removed from the side of the road. As this was not done by the Company, he did not think they should be held responsible. In reference to metalling the road he did not know what agreement had been made but was communicating with the head office and would notify the council ol their reply when received. From MrT. Pearce, complaining of cattle straying in Union street.

From Messrs Moore and Barnard, on behalf of Mr Hugh Walls, asking for permission from the Council to place drain pipes under footpath in front of his house to carry surface water into the drain in Union street.

Ftom Mr G. Brewer, offering to sell the Council a piece of land for the purpose of making a new street to connect Johnston and Reeve streets. —No action taken. From Messrs Herdman and Kirkcaldie, forwarding draft of contract for lighting the borough.— Approved of. * The Inspector of Nuisances reported that the Borough was in a clean and sanitary condition, the nuisance complained of last month having been attended to. The poundkeeper reported that during the month of Decembtt six head of cattle and seven horses had been impounded by the ranger, and 7s driving fees had been collected. Ten head of cattle and two horses had also been impounded by settlers. Accounts amounting to los 4d were passed for payment, and the report of the borough treasurer, overseer, inspector of nuisances and were adopted. It was decided on the motion of’ Cr Stiles, seconded by Cr; Frankland, that in reply to a letter from Mr Hugh Walls re surface water at corner of Union and Johnston Streets, that this Council will inspect and carry out necessary work.

It was proposed by Cr Frankland, and seconded by Cr Hennessy, that the gas syndicate be requested to at once repair the places on roads and footpaths that have been injured by their operations.—Carried.

The manner in which the ranger is attending to his duties was discussed. Several councillors voiced the opinion that the work was not being done as it should be, and it was decided that a copy of Mr Pearce’s letter be sent to the ranger and also to inform him that this Council is aware that he is not carrying out his duties as he ought to.

It was decided, on the motion of Cr Franklaud, seconded by Cr Coley, that Mr Chrystall’s tender for sinking artesian bore be accepted, well to be sunk in the triangle.

It was resolved that the seal of the Council to deed of consent to transfer from T. W. Butcher to the Foxton Gas Co. be affixed by Crs Coley and Franklaud. Crs Jenks and Hennessy were appointed to inspect the roof of the Council Chambers, and get all necessary repairs attended to. The Council rose at 10 p.m.
