THE HEMP INDUSTRY.
Thk present low price ruling for New Zealand hemp, comparative high royalties for the green blade, and protected industrial conditions, places the miller in the fourth instead of the first position. Tied by certain conditions to the grower—no, not the grower, because a bountiful Providence provided the plant—the miller is compelled to strip despite the falling price or forfeit his cutting rights. Thus the mills are kept going. The only consolation during the present depression is the fact that New Zealand hemp maintains its high standard and more than holds its own with Manila on the foreign market.
