The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, January 9,1909. HARBOUR BOARD ELECTION.
The first election of the elective member of the Foxtou Harbour Board will take place on Monday, February Bth next. The Board will be constituted of seven members, of whom four shall form a quorum, and such members shall be appointed and elected as follows: —One member to be appointed by the Governor; one member to be appointed by each of the following local bodies, and being a member of same : Mananawatu County Council, Palmerston North Borough Council, Feilding Borough Council, Levin Borough Council, the Mayor of Foxton and one member to be elected by the electors of the Borough of Foxton. The Governor may, by order in Council gazetted, appoint a Returning Officer and polling places for the purpose of the first election of a member and a day for such election and may make such further provision for the same purpose as he deems necessary. The meeting of delegates from the various local bodies, which takes place at Foxton on Monday next, will no doubt discuss and settle the preliminaries. The choice of an elected member, we anticipate, will fall upon Mr Heunessy, who has been one of the active promoters of the Bill. The suggestion of a suitable person as Government appointee will most probably be made by the member for the district. We see no apparent reason why Mr Newman should not act himself. When the Board is formed it will, no doubt, invite applications for the position of clerk —a very responsible office. When the Board is constituted it will take some time to get its house in order, and then it will be called upon to tackle the Government in reference to finance.
