“ SELLING THE HORSE.”

Gisborne, Janury 7

A riot occurred at an hotel when a young man from the country entered into a game called “ selling the horse/’ but then withdrew. Words aud fisticuffs ensued, followed by the throwing of bottles and other missiles. The landlady, who interposed, was knocked down, but was uninjured. No one was seriously injured. Five men were before the Court to-day, charged with riotous behaviour. The magistrate said he was satisfied the five accused attacked the young man (Richard Williams). The ringleaders Thomas Kennedy and Jas. Barnes —were fined £lO each, or three months’ imprisonment with hard labour. James Garretty, Denis Barry, and Daniel Ross were fined in default fourteen days’ imprisonment. Kennedy and Barker were also fined £>l each, and ordered to pay for the damage done.
