MAGISTRATE COURT RETURNS.
The following is a return of all criminal and civil cases brought before the Magistrate’s Court at Foxton during the year ending December 31st, 1908. CRIMINAL, CASES. There were 165 males and 17 females taken into custody, summoned or apprehended ; 14 males and 3 females were discharged for want of prosecution or want of evidence. Charges against 1 male and 2 females were dismissed on the merits; 105 males and 9 females were fined; 4 males were imprisoned in lieu of fine or surety, 3 males received peremptory imprison raeut. Orders were made against 20 males and 1 female and 17 males and 3 females were convicted and discharged with a caution. During the year there were 2 cases of abusive and threa leuing language, 8 breaches of the peace, 6 deserting and failing 10 provide for wives and children, 2 disobeying orders of the Court, 2 disorderly and riotous conduct, 25 cases of drunkenuesss, 2 failing to support parents and near relatives, 1 false pretences, 1 gaming offence, 1 indecent exposure, 2 malicious injury to property, 4 obscene language, 2 smoking opium, 1 impounding case, 2 stone throwing, 2 theft',! theft as a baillee 14, theft by servants 2, vagrancy 1. civil, CASES. 297 plaints were issued and 241 cases tried ; aggregate amount sued for 17s lod. Aggregate amount recovered, 18s 6d.
