THE HOLIDAY.

At the Beach.

A most enjoyable evening in the form of a surprise party was held in Mr Lewis Wilson’s seaside residence the other night, writes a correspondent, A large number of young people rolled up about 8 o’clock; and kept the ball merrily rolling uhtil well after midnight. Mr Wilson proved himself the best of hosts and did his utmost to add to the enjoymbnt ol the affair, which everyone agreed could not have been more delightful. Songs were rendered by Messrs. Potts, Hall and Cook, Mesdames Sicely and Howie, and by Misses Sicely and Howie. The Misses Morgan, Howie, and Mrs Potts played the accompaniments. Between the songs things were kept busy with dances, the rooms being crowded with couples revolving to the strains of “ The Merry Widow’ - waltz. Hearty cheers for the host closed what was unanimously agreed to have been one of the most pleasurable evenings ever spent at the beach.

The weather for .the Christmas holidays in this district was much belter than is recorded from other parts of the Dominion. On Christmas Day a westerly wind blew but there was 1:0 rain. Boxing Day was very warm. Rain fell during each night of the holidays. A very large number of people arrived by train and made their way to the Beach. Every house at the seaside was filled to overflowing with holiday-makers and tents were pitched, in all directions. Fishing, boating', bathing and rabbit shooting were indulged in and everyone appeared to be having a real good time. We are pleased to report that there were no serious accidents.

On Boxing Day Messrs Levin aud Co’s, launches and punts conveyed a large number ot people to the. Methodist picnic at the Beach and a happy time was spent . - A large number ol people took advantage of the cheap railway excursion fares, and travelled north aud south.
