The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, December 24, 1908. CHRISTMAS.
Before another issue ot the Herald reaches our readers, Christmas Day, 1908, will have come and gone. Preparations have been going forward during the last few days in almost every home in honour of the great Christmas Feast. Poultry, etc., have teen fattened and slaughtered to provide a “special spread” even in the most humble abode. The hams ! the roasts ! the puddings ! the bon bons! the quips and jokes around the festive board! the happy family reunions! What joy and gladness—would that we could linger alone on those two words. Sorrow must, alas, be mingled with the merry-making. Memory will recall absent ones; the old days ; those asleep ; the sick and afflicted; lonliness and tears to some—to whom our sympathy is extended. 'Tis a glad time —a time to forget bitterness and shortcomigs and to renew friendships. We celebrate the birth of Him whose coming was to bring peace and good-will among men. Peace and goodwill ! The warlike preparations by the nations provide a sad commentary, yet we are hopeful. The foundation of international peace will be secure and lasting only when based upon the principles laid down by Him whose birth is about to be commemorated throughout Christiandom to-morrow. May each and all have a real good time: “ may good digestion wait on appetite, and health on both.” To all our readers we heartily wish
A Merry Christmas !
