The Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 1908. RIFLE VOLUNTEERS—NOT WANTED.
Some time ago a few volunteer enthusiasts made an effort to raise a local corps, and were successful |u enrolling the required number of “ privates." Up to the present the services of the company have not been accepted. A telegram from New Plymouth states that the proposal to form a mounted rifle corps .there has practically, fallen through on account of the discourtesy and apparent apathy of the defence authorities. Sixty-eight would-be soldiers handed in their names, but after waiting over a month to receive a reply and authority from the department to enrol, decided to give the project up.
