SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.
Responding to the toast ol his health at a banquet at Wanganui, Webb stated that he was not going to throw up the sponge already. He intended to go into taining again, and if he found he could obtain more pace than he had hitherto succeeded in doing, he would again issue a challenge for the title.
Fogwell has as yet arranged nothing further in the matter of the proposed race with Whelch. It is suggested at Christchurch that a subscription be raised for the purpose of making Arnst a presentation from the citizens of Christchurch.
Arnst, who is aged 25, has now, in his races, defeated S. Kemp twice, C. Towns once, H. Pearce once and W. Webb once. Arnst’s best time on the Parramatta course is One mile srnin 4isec, two miles nmiu 55sec, and full distance 2omin sosec. Webb’s time over the same course is : —One mile smin 4osec, two miles umiu 52sec and full distance 2omin 28sec.
Richard Arnst who beat Webb for the sculling championship of the world on Tuesday, has received a cable message from Tom Sullivan, the erstwhile champion sculler of New Zealand, and now of Loudon, stating that if Arnst cared to go home he could get a match with Barry, the English champion, but so far Arnst has made no arrangements for the future. He will probably go south next week to talk over matters with his backers. In the meantime, he has authorised Mr R. Coombes to insert iu the Sydney Referee a challenge to the effect that he and Fogwell are prepared to double scull any pair in the world.
