INVERCARGILL SENSATION.

A Shooting Affair.

Invercakgill, Dec. 16

A singular shooting affray occuired at North Invercargill on Monday night, A motoring party was leaving a residence when a married woman named Mrs Buchanan appeared and fired six shots from a revolver, wounding one of the occupants, Miss McKay, on the arm. The assailant, who had been caretaker ot the house during the owner’s absence in England, is supposed to be suffering from mental aberration.

Maud Buchanan was subsequently arrested on a charge of having attempted to murder Vera McKay. Mrs Buchanau was charged before a Justice of the Peace and remanded. Bail was not applied for. Police enquiries have so far thrown no new light on the shooting. It seems clear that Mrs Buchanan has entertained a grudge against Miss McKay, but just what the nature of that grudge was, is not definitely known. She had been on friendly terms up to some months ago. Mr and Mrs Buchanan looked after McKay’s house during the latter’s trip to America a year or two ago and they continued to live with the McKay family for five months after their return home. Since then some estrangement occurred and relations have been strained. Miss McKay is the daughter of David McKay and was shot through the fleshy part of the arm near the elbow. She is not seriously hurt.

It is stated that Mrs Buchanan had been suffering from periodical nervous instability.
