Wool Sales,
The most conspicuous feature of the wool sales which opened at the Town Hall, Wellington, on Friday, was the strong American competition for the finest lines of crossbreds. The quantities offered by brokers amounted to 7.603 bales, or 600 bales more than at the cor? ersponding sale of last year, At t hefirst sale, held on November 13th, 1386 bales only were offered, was the lowest quantity tor the November sales of the previous Uhree years. Prices at the last jqle (says, the £ost) went Up to §d Jot crossbreds in one instance {paly, but crossbreds that ranged .jrttrn to 8d then changed hands ®Tirom jod to n J4d last week,. prices were more or less on a those of two yearn ago, wh»at Now^er r :
I 9°7> to was paid for super fine crossbreds that went for from y£d to 8d at the first sale of November of this year, while there was a corresponding fall for other wools. Last week buyers were present in full force, representing Bradfoid, Huddersfield, German, French Belgian, Australia and American houses, also representatives from New Zealand mills for wools suitable for local requirements. Competition, was keen from the very start, Americans going for the top qualities, favouring crossbreds and especially those that were well prepared. While thefe might be side by side two clips of identically the same quality, that which was properly skirted and well got up generally would fetch from rod to 1 id, and the other, not so well classed, would realise to y|d. The reason for the difference was that, in the case of Americans, 3d per lb could not be paid for dirt, duty having to be paid upon the weight of the wool.
