When a political candidate is defeated at the hustings, he naturally feels a little sore, but as rule, he takes his beating philosophically, and holds back much that his ' “ lower self ’ ’ prompts him to utter. Some defeated candidates say things when returning thanks after the declaration of the poll, that they live to regret. But what can be said of a man, who, alter a win, so far forgets himself as to. allow his tongue to articulate : -.statements which disclose an utter lack of self control. Wheif Mr Ross, the elect of Pahiatua, returned thanks to his constituents at Pahiatua, on Tuesday night, he finished up by calling for ■ three cheers for the Opposition candidate, three groans for Mr Gooper’s committee and secretary, and three groans for the Herald newspaper.. Even supposing Mr Ross had cause |pr. complaint against the newspaper ', and
other opponents, he could deal with them in a much more dignified manner than the course he adopted, which will, no doubt, not be forgotten in the time to come.
