A FEIPPANT POLITICIAN

“Did you ever hear such utter nonsense,’said Mr Buick, referring to the Eevin-Greatford Railway, in an election speech at Palmerston recently. “ Fancy a loop line through a swamp, and over barren sandhills with two magnificent rivers to bridge. And all to save fifteen miles on a journey of 300 miles. Is it likely they will side-track Palmerston North and Feilding, simply because a couple of. silly asses like John Stevens and W. H. Field want it. It is simply ridiculous.” If Mr Buick is reported correctly, then all we can say is that he is either a political “sail-trimmer” or an ignoramus, so far as the question of linking up the Main Trunk Eine between Eevin and Marton is concerned. His remarks in respect to swamp and sand, and sidetracking Palmerston and Feilding were apparently uttered with the object of “vote-catching.” Mr Buick will yet have the tact forced upon him that this railway connection is of greater importance to the Dominion as a whole than his limited perceptive faculties can at present grasp, and he should be careful in future, when referring to this matter, to avoid being held up to ridicule.
