LOCAL AND GENERAL.

It will be noted from the church advertisement that the Presbyterian services to-morrow will be conducted in the morning by Mr A. Fry, of Eevin, and in the evening by the Rev. G. K. Aitken. The latter will take for his subject, “ Can a Man save himself?” At Timaru on Thursday, William and Mysie Lang, who arrived from Victoria four months ago, were fined 20s and costs (£1 is each) for making a false declaration in a claim of enrolment that they had been resident in New Zealand 12 months. Carterton has started a movement to present Mr Hornsby with a substantial recognition of his services to the district while a member of the House. The presentation is being made in view of his probable departure from Wairarapa.

It is rumoured in Rome that the Duke of Abruzzi’s betrothal to Miss Elkins, daughter of Senator Elkins, of the United States, has been cancelled, owing to Queen Margherita’s and the Duke and Duchess of Aosta’s unconquerable opposition.

At the Feilding Court on Thursday, Norman Wood, aged about 22, pleaded guilty to a charge of throwing an egg among the people at Feilding on the night of the election. The Bench, Messrs Piraui and Trewin, characterised the act as filthy and cowardly and they imposed the maximum fine of £5 or one month’s imprisonment, The fine was paid. In thanking the electors after his defeat for Wairarapa, Mr J. T. M. Hornsby says:—“ Nothing now remains for me but to bid you all an affectionate farewell. I retire into private life with, at least, the knowledge that I have tried to do my duty as a public man. Wairarapa has chosen. The majority have pronounced against the programme of progress laid down by me; they have pronounced against closer settlement. Herein, I venture to say, is matter for regret. To my opponents and my friends alike, I say good-bye.”

Now that the excitement of the election is over for the time being, we can give our thoughts to the topic of the day : The sale of pianos and organs is now being conducted by Mr Wesley Woolhouse, in Foxtou. The chance of securing a really first-class instrument by the world’s leading makers on the easist possible terms, should not be missed by anyone interested in how to make the home bright. A number of residents have already taken advantage of this opportunity, by placing their orders in the hands of a reliable and well-known practical man. We advise others to do likewise.*

Masterton’s “ dry ” area, which is to take effect in June next (writes our Wairaiapa correspondent) runs from the Waingawa River, seven miles north of Carterton, to Konini, within four miles from Pahiatua. The distance along the railway line is about 44 miles. It includes the following districts: Kuripuni, Masterlbn, Opaki, Kopuaranga, Mauriceville, Hastwell, Kaipororo,' Mangamahoe, Tane, Newman, Nireaha, Rougokokako, Hamua, Makuri, Kaitawa, Hukanui, Konini, Alfredton, and Waterfalls. The entire population is set down at 11,816. A portion of Makuri is in the proscribed electorate, but not the Makuri Hotel itself. The nearest hotels which will be at the disposal of thirsty Masterton town residents will be at Taratahi, eight miles south, and at Taueru, nine miles north. Ekethuna will either have to travel thirty-six miles south, and eighteen miles north for its drink, while Alfredton will have to journey thirty miles.
